Botulism scare blamed on glitches, equipment problems
FONTERRA said systematic glitches and the use of non-standard equipment have resulted in the contamination scare last month that affected several clients and consumers across various countries, the New Zealand dairy company said today.
An information-sharing lapse within the company also led to a delay for a further testing process, as New Zealand authorities confirmed at the end of last month that the initial botulism scare revealed in early August turned out to be a false alarm.
"We have created a new role of Group Director of Food Safety and Quality reporting directly to the CEO, Fonterra Chief Executive Officer Theo Spierings said in a statement.
Fonterra revealed that 38 tons of whey protein concentrate was contaminated and initiated a recall in early August that affected big name infant formula makers and beverage companies.
The company said today that a major upgrade of the computer systems at some of its sites prior to the recall resulted in a longer tracing process than it should have.
The dairy company also pledged to strengthen its product recall and supply management systems that allow the tracing of all the product that is in its control, and collaborate with customers on how to link different supply chains and quickly trace products.
New Zealand's Ministry of Primary Industries commissioned new tests in local and United States labs and confirmed at the end of August that the bacteria in Fonterra's contaminated whey protein was Clostridium sporogenes, a different strain of Clostridium botulinum that does not produce neurotoxins.
The dairy company's internal operational review was led by Fonterra's group director of strategy, Maury Leyland.
An independent inquiry by Fonterra's board of directors and two New Zealand government-led queries are currently under way.
