Card holders more cautious about online payments

CHINESE credit and debit card holders are more cautious about making payments online compared with swiping cards at offline retailers and withdrawing cash from automatic teller machines, a recent survey about payment behavior shows.

Information leaks and Internet phishing — using a fake webpage to steal card owners' information — were the top two safety concerns of card owners when purchasing online, the study shows.

The online survey was launched by the economic crimes unit of the Ministry of Public Security through China UnionPay and official homepages of 15 domestic commercial banks. It queried nearly 170,000 consumers in 31 provinces.

More than 80 percent of respondents said they would report online payment fraud to police.

The report also shows that younger online shoppers are more willing to use online banking service, while half of those over 50 years old said they preferred mobile point-of-sale machines when paying for online orders.

Online payment is booming with more than 80 percent of respondents spending an average of over 500 yuan (US$82.47) each month for online shopping, growing from 65 percent two years ago.
