Carrefour store closed after labeling expose
A CARREFOUR store was closed down in Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan Province yesterday morning amid accusations of changing expiration data and passing off regular chicken as more expensive free-range.
The French retailer received a temporary shutdown order from the local industry and commerce bureau after a China Central Television program highlighted its misbehavior on China's Consumer Rights Day last Thursday.
The market watchdog said it has launched a probe into the store's products and account books, and will decide on further punishment accordingly.
It didn't specify how long the store suspension will last, saying Carrefour can apply for a second review after taking corrective actions.
At a press conference last Satureday, Carrefour apologized for the problems it caused for consumers, promising refunds and compensation to any one involved.
Zhang Zhen, deputy general manager of the central-west region of Carrefour China, said the implicated store manager has been put on probation, and the employees who took direct responsibilities for the misbehavior have been suspended from their jobs.
All its stores in the city are going through an overhaul currently, Zhang said.
