Chinese travelers tap Internet for information before making purchases overseas, survey shows

AS many as 90 percent of Chinese travelers have planned their luxury purchases by checking product information online before buying from overseas markets, as Chinese consumers continue to play a significant part in the worldwide luxury market, a latest survey shows.

The major sources of their purchasing plans are luxury brands' official websites and social media platforms, according to the Nielsen Mainland Chinese Luxury Shopper Survey.

Accessories and high-end cosmetics and skin care products are the most popular categories among outbound travelers. The Nielsen survey polled 1,005 respondents from the Internet in August this year.

With 45 percent of respondents saying they have bought luxury items online, 48 percent of them said that they are still considering it.

Among those who already bought online or who are ready to try, 90 percent of them said they will buy luxury goods online in the next 12 months.

Chinese travelers in the survey said they have made an average of 3 overseas trips over the last 12 months, and Hong Kong and South Korea are the top two destinations, followed by Macau and Japan.

With regard to the channels for purchasing luxury goods, 26 percent of the respondents said they would choose brand specialty shops, followed by 24 percent that prefer airport duty-free stores.
