City store sets daily sales record on New Year's Eve

NEXT Age Department Store in Shanghai set a national daily sales record for a single store after ringing up 258 million yuan (US$37.66 million) in transactions on New Year's Eve, a local newspaper reported today.

The store sold 238,800 yuan of goods per minute, a 21.13% increase over the same day in 2007, Oriental Morning Post reported.

Retail sales in the last week of 2008 increased 27.6 percent in the city compared to the same period of the previous year and jumped 30.5 percent over the previous week due to numerous promotions, according to the Shanghai Commercial Information Center, the report said.

To tackle the influence of the global financial crisis, most stores in the city had large promotions for Christmas and the year's end. On New Year's Eve, major department stores at Nanjing Pedestrian Mall, Xintiandi, Daning, Xujiahui and Wujiaochang stayed open until after midnight.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers on the city's eight metro lines reached a record of 4.31 million on December 31, the report said.
