Coca-Cola fosters Mama’s Homes to empower women in Sichuan communities

QIN Guoying, General Secretary of the China Women’s Development Fund, and Zhang Huaying, Vice President of Coca-Cola China and Korea, joined representatives from several local government agencies to jointly inaugurate two new Mama’s Home centers in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, yesterday.

Mama’s Homes are community women’s empowerment centers managed in partnership with local authorities, social organizations and businesses. The main goal of these centers is to promote family, community and economic development in areas affected by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.

To date, four Mama’s Homes have opened their doors. It is estimated that these centers benefit 50,000 women each year by offering courses on business topics, housekeeping, cooking, nursing and handiwork. These centers also help organize part-time jobs to serve local communities.

Designed specifically for mothers, these Mama’s Homes are equipped with childcare areas where women can leave their children as they concentrate on learning skills or engaging in part-time employment.

Qin has praised the achievements of the Mama’s Home’s initiative. “Women are the core of families and communities. Unlike other conventional community sponsorship programs, Mama’s Home pilots a win-win solution to a host of community needs by furthering women’s social and economic independence,” she said.

Mama’s Homes have enjoyed much early success. Many women participating in the program say they have become more confident and happier by helping themselves and serving others in their local communities.

Wei Rong, for instance, went to Mama’s Home every day to attend shuxiu-style embroidery classes in her spare time. After six months of training, she sold one piece of handiwork for several thousand yuan. Now her dream is to become an embroidery master.

Meanwhile, Lily Wang studied business management with Mama’s Home, and now the grocery store she runs brings in enough income to cover her family’s daily expenses. As an entrepreneur, she is now actively planning a bright future for her daughter.

As Zhang remarked, “Coca-Cola strongly believes that sustainable business growth is built on the sustainable development of the communities where we operate. We are proud to be part of this meaningful program.”

Also according to Zhang, Mama’s Homes demonstrate the local relevancy and collaborative potential of Coca-Cola’s 5by20 programs, a global initiative which aims to empower 5 million women by 2020 through Coca-Cola’s value chain.

Coca-Cola and the China Women’s Development Fund are fully committed to this program and plan to establish a total of 20 Mama’s Home centers in Sichuan province over the next two years, and to gradually expand the Mama’s Home program to other provinces across the country.
