Commercial tech needs favorable environment

CHINA needs to ensure a favorable environment to commercialize technology and boost collaboration to ensure that innovation drives the country’s economy, Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang said in Shanghai yesterday.

The emergence of new industries such as Internet Plus, e-commerce, robot manufacturing and green energy “will help China shift from a resource-driven growth mode to one that relies more on innovation,” Wan said at the 3rd China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair, which opened yesterday.

China’s output from high-tech industries rose 11.4 percent from a year earlier in the first quarter, 5 percentage points faster than the growth rate of general industrial production and above the 7 percent expansion in China’s gross domestic product during the same period.

Wan said: “We need to continue improving the policy environment for technology transfer and bolster interaction among research and development centers, universities and businesses.”

Last year, China had signed more than 290,000 technology transfer deals worth over 857 billion yuan (US$138 billion), up 14.8 percent from a year earlier.

“China should also strengthen cooperation with overseas partners in innovation and technological development,” Wan said.

The fair, which will run through tomorrow at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, has drawn companies from 139 countries and regions. The Czech Republic became the first guest country at the fair.

Today, the UN Industrial Development Organization will host a forum, “Promote Science and Technology Innovation by Technology Trade — Implement ‘One Belt, One Road’ National Strategy,” at the fair.
