Construction starts on last phase of LCD mega-factory

TCL Corp, a Chinese electrical manufacturer, announced yesterday it started the construction of the last phase of its biggest liquid crystal display manufacturing base.

The finished facility, which will cost 2.6 billion yuan (US$382 million), will boast an annual output of 5 million LCD TVs, 8 million LCD modules, 20 million DVDs and 6 million LCD components on completion.

The first phase, which cost 1.2 billion yuan, is already operating and has an annual production capacity of 8 million LCD modules.

The second phase, worth 600 million yuan, started production today.

The plant, covering an area of 53,700 square meters with 8 assembly lines, is expected to produce 700,000 LCD televisions by the end of this year. It can make 3 million TVs with screen-size between 15 inches and 55 inches and 2 million larger-sized TVs.

"The company's integration of the upstream business has sharply cut the cost and lifted our competitiveness in LCD TVs," said Li Dongsheng, president of TCL Corp. "It can also expand our capability to meet booming demands from home and abroad."
