Consumers splash out US$84b

CHINA'S retail sales of consumer goods totaled 570 billion yuan (US$84 billion) during the National Day holiday, with average daily sales up 18 percent from the same period of last year, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.

Sales of home appliances soared during the eight-day holiday which started on October 1. Among them, high-definition flat screen TV sets, digital cameras, side-by-side refrigerators and 3G mobile phones were consumers' favorites.

In the case of Kaiyuan Mall in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, sales of home appliances jumped 34.7 percent year on year.

Jewelry and cars became hot sellers as well. Sales of jewelry at Caishikou Department Store in Beijing topped 100 million yuan, up 30 percent year on year. Sales of major auto companies in Chongqing Municipality soared 71.7 percent year on year.

The sales boom in home appliances and cars was partly helped by a State Council policy in June which aimed to spur domestic consumption by subsidizing buyers of these items, the ministry said.
