Couriers’ delivery workload doubles

Chinese courier firms have received more than 60 million parcels, double that of last year, for delivery following the Single’s Day online shopping frenzy on Monday, the State Post Bureau said yesterday.

The online shopping platforms received a total of 180 million orders on Monday, a surge of 85 percent from that of last year, the bureau said.

“So the courier firms are facing great pressure to handle all these parcels on time,” said Huang Gang, director of a logistics expert panel with the China E-Business Association.

The nine major Chinese couriers, including Shanghai firms such as YTO Express, ZTO, Yunda and STO, received a record-setting 10 million parcels on Monday, according to data from the association.

Huang said some 80 percent of the orders were made on Taobao.com, the biggest domestic online shopping platform.

The courier firms are better prepared this year and the delivery system is not likely be paralyzed, a ZTO official told Shanghai Daily.

SF Express is offering a 2 yuan (33 US cents) discount to encourage customers to pick up parcels from its distribution centers to ease the workload of its delivery men.

But Huang said that although the courier firms may have added staff and more vehicles, the amount of parcels they received was still beyond their expectations.
