Cross-bankcard spending increases 37%
CROSS-BANKCARD transaction volume grew 37 percent in 2012 from a year ago with spending on travel and transportation climbing, industry figures showed.
Bankcard related transaction volume, including spending through point of sales machines at department stores and retailers and cash settlement through automatic telling machines, surged 37 percent from a year earlier to 21.8 trillion yuan (US$3.50 billion), the country's sole bankcard transaction firm China Unionpay said today.
UnionPay's overseas transaction volume jumped 30 percent as more Chinese traveled to other countries.
UnionPay has been actively extending its networks and now more than 10 million vendors and 1 million ATMs in 141 overseas countries and regions accept UnionPay cards.
Last week, the National Bureau of Statistics said total retail sales grew 12.1 percent last year on an inflation-adjusted basis, lower than the 14.9 percent growth from a year ago.
