Cruise ship to call Shanghai as home
Carnival Corp & Plc, the world’s biggest cruise ship operator, will bring its premium Princess Cruises brand to China to tap growing travel demand by Chinese.
Sapphire Princess, the first cruise ship, will use Shanghai as its home port for four months, starting May. The vessel, with a capacity of around 2,670 passengers, will sail to South Korean destinations including Seoul, Busan and Jeju Island, and passengers can choose from four itineraries of three days to seven days.
“We intend over the long term to offer a much broader array of itineraries as the market becomes further developed, but for now we would start with short cruises due to the vacation time limit,” said Jan Swartz, Princess’ executive vice president.
Swartz added that Princess would use other Chinese cities as home ports when it brings more cruise ships to China.
There were 170 international cruise ship departures from Chinese mainland cities in 2012, up 19.7 percent from a year earlier, the China Cruise & Yacht Industry Association said.
