Dianping.com to make police report on deals
Dianping.com, a restaurant review website, will make a police report that it was deceived by an unnamed counterparty into selling non-existing McDonald’s promotional meal deals, causing a loss of 2.2 million yuan (US$359,420) to the website.
According to its preliminary investigation, the Shanghai-based company specializing in location-based food and entertainment services claimed that it may have been deceived into selling non-existing group-buying products online, it said in a statement yesterday.
We will make a report to the police together with McDonald’s on this matter, Dianping said.
According to the statement, 226,329 digital coupons had been sold to consumers on Monday.
Sold for 9.90 yuan, the coupons could be exchanged for a meal set valued at 19.50 yuan in McDonald’s more than 700 outlets on the Chinese mainland.
On Monday afternoon, McDonald’s denied any collaboration with websites or businesses for such a deal after the coupons had already been sold.
Dianping said the purchases will be refunded to consumers before noon today and they will also receive additional compensation.
