Discounts on cell phone trade-ins

HOME appliance retailers are offering a 10 percent refund to customers who upgrade mobile phones in an attempt to penetrate the market.

Cell phone sales account for around 10 percent of a retailer's revenue, but analysts say the sector could add new value for retailers.

Retailers Suning, Gome, Yongle will launch the discounts this weekend in cooperation with industry associations including Shanghai Household Electric Appliance Profession Association and Shanghai Commercial Trade Association of Household Electric and Electronic Appliances.

Cell phones are not included in the national subsidy for people turning in old appliances for new ones. However, 7.5 million phones have been sold in Shanghai so far this year, with more than 80 percent being upgrades.

"As the cell phone market is recovering from a slow demand, handset makers need to tie up with retailers to make the market bigger and stronger," said Chen Jing, Shanghai manager for Lenovo handset department.

Suning will kick off the 10 percent refund on Friday without a price cap while refunds from Gome and Yongle will be capped at 200 yuan. In addition, consumers can get up to 50 yuan for returning their old models.
