Evidence faker on the run abroad
Zhang Hai, former chairman of Chinese energy drinks company Jianlibao Group who was jailed in 2007, has fled abroad after he gave fake evidence to receive a reduced sentence.
The procuratorate of Guangdong Province has confirmed that Zhang has fled, the website of CCTV, the national broadcaster, reported yesterday without giving details.
In 2007, Zhang was convicted of embezzling corporate funds and sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Foshan City Intermediate People’s Court.
But in 2008, the sentence was reduced to 10 years after Zhang gave clues to the police to help them solve a house robbery case. In 2011, he received a conditional release.
He was, however, later found to have fabricated the evidence for the reduced sentence, the Guangdong Provincial Higher People’s Court said last Friday in a statement.
There was a retrial in the Shaoguan City Intermediate People’s Court in Guangdong, which then revoked the commutation of Zhang’s sentence last October, the statement said.
Local media said the court found Zhang had bribed jail officials to get clues in the house robbery case.
