Fonterra NZ milk products head resigns over food scare

New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra said today that its managing director for New Zealand Milk Products Gary Romano has resigned with immediate effect.

Chief executive officer Theo Spierings accepted Romano's resignation, Fonterra said in a statement on its official website today.

Spierings would assume interim responsibility for the department, which is the dairy company's manufacturing operations division, according to Fonterra.

His resignation followed the bolutism contamination scare that broke out earlier this month.

The contaminated raw material affected eight customers whose products include big-brand infant formula and sports drinks that had been exported to seven countries including China.

Two inquiries have been launched by Fonterra and another one by New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries to look into how 38 tons of whey protein was contaminated with a bacterium that can cause botulism.

Romano was a veteran in the dairy industry and joined Fonterra in 2005, New Zealand local media reported.
