Food costs and safety are top issues

FOOD prices and safety are the top concerns for Shanghai residents, a government study showed yesterday.

More than 80 percent of survey respondents listed the cost of food - including staples, meat, edible oil and vegetables among more than 40 items - as their principal concern.

The survey, conducted through online questionnaires on Shanghai city government's official website, involved 660 respondents.

Shanghai's Consumer Price Index rose 5.8 percent last month compared with a year earlier. Food costs surged 12.6 percent year on year.

In the first eight months of this year, Shanghai's CPI rose 5.2 percent on an annual basis, higher than the city government's 4 percent target set at the beginning of the year.

Food safety was the second-most important issue for 77.1 percent of the people surveyed.

Public transportation was the third-most pertinent issue - 74.5 percent said they hoped the government will improve traffic conditions.

Nearly 70 percent said improvement of healthcare services and lowering of medical costs were a priority.
