Haier sees no basis in reports

HAIER Group has rejected reports that two young girls were electrocuted when they used faulty Haier refrigerators.

"Haier's refrigerators don't have safety problems and we obey all the safety regulations," Zhang Tieyan, a spokeswoman with Haier Group, said yesterday.

Media reports said electric shock killed an 11-year-old girl in Jiangxi Province in mid August and an eight-year-old girl in Guangdong Province in early February when they used Haier's refrigerators.

Haier said a certificate from the consumers' association in Jiangxi and the provincial watchdog of consumer electronics proved its refrigerators were safe and sound. Investigations in Guangdong also showed the same result.

Instead Haier claimed that electric leakage in the victims' households' plug-ins was to blame for the deaths.

"We have explained the reason of the accident to the families of the deceased and they have shown understanding," Zhang claimed.
