Happy retailers

THE value of total retail sales in Hong Kong in October, provisionally estimated at HK$27.8 billion (US$3.6 billion), grew 21.6 percent from a year earlier, according to the Census and Statistics Department yesterday.

A government spokesman said retail sales grew briskly in October. Sustained robust sales of big ticket items and consumer discretionaries reflected the firm consumer sentiment and vibrant tourist spending.

After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, the volume of total retail sales rose 19.6 percent in October from a year earlier.
