Holiday joy for retailers and hotels in Shanghai

Good weather on most days during the National Day holiday and big discounts offered by retailers resulted in record figures for tourism and retail sales, Shanghai authorities said yesterday.

Sales in the city’s department stores, supermarkets and specialty shops jumped 11.8 percent compared to last year during the seven-day holiday to 6.86 billion yuan (US$1.11 billion), the Shanghai Commission of Commerce said.

Meanwhile, the city attracted a total of 7.61 million tourists between October 1 and 7, 10 percent more than in the same period of last year, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said, and tourism revenue rose 21.4 percent to 7.4 billion yuan.

“Comfortable weather, various events and big discounts helped the city’s retail sales reach a new high,” said a commission official who added that since China launched the seven-day holiday 13 years ago, retail sales in the city had increased more than six fold.

Car sales boomed with sales at Fengjie Car Co Ltd rocketing 58.3 percent, leading other retailers who also enjoyed robust growth, the commission said.

Sales of food rose 34.2 percent, followed by clothes and household appliances, with increases of 30.1 percent and 24.7 percent, respectively.

The city’s hotels and restaurants reported booming business. Hotel revenue gained 19.7 percent, while restaurants saw their income rise 2.8 percent.

Online shops reported even stronger growth with a 51.1 percent rise, the commission said.

The Global Harbor, Shanghai’s biggest complex integrating shopping and entertainment, received more than 627,000 visitors as it became a new place for people to spend time and money.
