Hotel group expanding

CONFIDENCE in China's hotel market has been confirmed with the Starwood Group committing to doubling its presence in China to more than 100 hotels by 2012.

The group - which has a stable of hotel brands including the St Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Westin, Le Meridien, Sheraton, and Four Points - has 76 projects in development in China.

Qian Jin, senior vice president of operations for China, said the group saw strong growth potential in the nation.

"China has 171 cities with populations of more than 1 million, so there are a lot of people with a lot of different lifestyles that we can cater for," he said. "I personally believe that the more budget conscious end of the market still has a lot of room to grow."

This year the group will open 26 hotels in China, the group official said.
