InterContinental woos Chinese travelers with new brand

INTERCONTINENTAL Hotels Group has signed 12 contracts to manage hotels in smaller cities under its newly launched brand Hualuxe as the international hotel chain caters to domestic clients.
The company signed contracts with 12 property owners to operate the Hualuxe hotels and is still in talks with 20 other property owners, IHG China Chief Executive Keith Barr said in an interview yesterday.
The first Hualuxe should open in early 2014, he said. The brand was launched early this year in a bid to lure more Chinese travelers. All Hualuxe hotels will feature noodle bars and tea houses.
Barr said IHG expects to open Hualuxe hotels in 100 Chinese cities in the next 15 to 20 years, mainly in second- and third-tier cities like Chengdu, Xi'an and Zhangjiajie where he finds huge business potentials.
The company also received inquiries about Hualuxe from proprietors in cities like London and Paris as they hope to tap the rising number of Chinese travelers, Barr said, adding that Hualuxe will eventually go abroad.
IHG is the world's largest hotel management company by number of rooms, operating under the brands of InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn.
