Italy eyes World Expo as base for great food
ITALY targets the World Expo in Shanghai this year as a platform to export more "genuine" food products to China as it showcases its culture in traditional farming, Italian Minister of Agriculture Luca Zaia said in the city yesterday.
"Italian food has a worldwide reputation just as Chinese food has," Zaia said. "We expect to sell more of our quality wine, cheese, ham, potato and olive oil to China."
Though many food products sold in China claimed to be made in Italy, only about 10 percent of them are genuine Italian food, Zaia said.
He signed a memorandum with China's Minister of Agriculture Han Changbin on Tuesday to fight against fake products, strengthen cooperation in food research and development, raise quality control standard and promote bilateral trade in food. The memo will also see the two countries encourage cooperation between their small- and medium-sized agricultural firms.
Zaia, who is on his first visit to Shanghai and due to give a speech at Fudan University today, said his ministry will invite some Italian farmers to the World Expo to show visitors its traditional farming methods.
Italy produced 80 billion euros (US$115.9 billion) of food products last year, and 25 billion euros were exported.
