Jin Jiang launches Marvel brand
HONG Kong-listed Shanghai Jin Jiang International Hotels (Group) Co Ltd, China's largest hotel owner and operator, announced yesterday it is launching a new hotel brand to tap growing demand from a younger generation of business travelers across the country.
The Marvel brand, which targets domestic business travelers aged between 28 and 45 years old, will also compete against international hotel brands including Courtyard by Marriott, Holiday Inn Express as well as Ibis, the hotelier said.
"The introduction of the Marvel brand, positioned between three- and four-star hotels, marks our latest effort to further strengthen the overall brand awareness of the group," said Yang Weimin, managing director and chief executive officer of Jin Jiang Hotel. "Under our plan, new luxury and upscale hotel brands will also be launched very soon, probably by the end of this year."
The first Marvel Hotel, a refurbishment of the YMCA Hotel on downtown Xizang Rd S., will start trial operations today. The hotel group will open more hotels under the Marvel brand in Shanghai and will also expand to other first and second-tier cities.
The company will probably adopt a franchising model in the future to accelerate its growth across the country, Yang added.
Jin Jiang Hotel, ranked the 13th-largest hotel group in the world by Hotels Magazine in 2009 in terms of room numbers, operates more than 540 hotels, or over 90,000 guest rooms, covering from luxury to economy markets nationwide.
Several world leading hoteliers are also keen on China's mid-scale hotel market. InterContinental Hotels Group, the world's largest hotel company by room numbers, said in April 2009 that it planned to add another 100 properties in China over the next two to three years. It would mainly focus on its Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands.
Europe's largest hotel company, Accor, also said earlier it aimed to double its portfolio in China over the next three years.
