Juneyao Group plans to sell imported baby formulas
SHANGHAI Juneyao Group plans to enter the milk powder market this year by opening franchised stores to sell imported milk powder in its original packaging, the group's chairman said yesterday.
Juneyao will cooperate with popular foreign producers to import milk powders in their original cans and sell them in an effort to help the increasing number of mainland parents who are trying to purchase formula from Hong Kong, said Wang Junjin, the group's chairman.
"The company will do it for the social benefits, because it is too difficult for local parents to buy foreign formula," Wang, who is also a National People's Congress deputy, told Shanghai Daily on the sidelines of the annual meeting.
The announcement was made after Hong Kong announced that travelers face fines of up to HK$500,000 (US$64,500) and up to two years in jail if they are found carrying more than two cans, or 1.8 kilograms, of milk powder for infants under the age of 3.
Parents on the mainland have long been purchasing formula in Hong Kong, after losing faith in similar products produced on the mainland following baby formula scandals in recent years.
Wang said the company will strictly monitor its transportation system to ensure the safety of imported milk formulas.
The group also owns Juneyao Airline and a dairy operation. It also participated in manufacturing and selling products for Shanghai World Expo 2010 and the Beijing Olympics.
