Marriott to double hotels in Asia
MARRIOTT International Inc plans to double the number of hotels in Asia Pacific, betting travel demand will continue to rise, it said yesterday.
"We see this as a golden age of travel around the world," said Simon Cooper, Marriott International's president and managing director in Asia. "Yes the economy is slow in the world, but it doesn't stop people from traveling."
The hotel chain aims to increase the size of its portfolio in Asia to at least 265 hotels by 2016, with more than 80,000 rooms in 16 countries.
The company, which operates brands including The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott, has 132 hotels open in Asia and a pipeline of signed and approved deals totaling an additional 143 properties.
Cooper added that China and India are the driving forces for its Asian business.
