Meiji seeks to return with fresh dairy debut

Japanese food and dairy maker Meiji Holdings will debut its fresh dairy products in east China next month as it returns to the Chinese market after it withdrew its milk powder products last month.

The company will start selling fresh milk and yogurt in Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Ningbo. The raw milk will come mainly from Hebei Province, Meiji said in a statement.

It will become the first foreign company to tap the fresh milk market in China.

Meiji, which also offers snacks and chocolate products in China, said it aims to generate an annual revenue of 700 million yuan (US$114.8 million) in China by 2020.

Meiji withdrew four milk powder products last month under “intense competition and rising costs of raw materials.”
