Mengniu issues ultimatum to ice cream factory over poor hygiene
China Mengniu Dairy Co said it has ordered Inner Mongolia Tianfu Dairy Co, a subcontractor of its ice cream business, to improve its working conditions and suspended some workers for violating the company's rules.
Mengniu said in a statement that it ordered the ice cream factory to solve the exposed hygiene problems within 48 hours; otherwise it will terminate the contract with Tianfu Dairy.
However, it also said that all products made by Tianfu Dairy have passed quality tests based on the national food safety standards before being shipped to distributors.
Mengniu pledged to step up supervision of its ice cream production lines around the country to avoid such problems.
Earlier this month, an intern working at Tianfu Dairy posted his discovery of the factory's poor sanitation, alleging that spoiled ingredients were recycled and ice cream that dropped onto the floor was picked up and packed again.
