Most keen web shoppers earn less than US$815

PEOPLE with a monthly income under 5,000 yuan (US$815) are the most active online shoppers in Shanghai, the local statistics bureau said in a survey yesterday.
Those who earn below 5,000 yuan a month most favored online shopping because of convenience and lower prices. They accounted for about two-thirds of the online shoppers that were surveyed by the Shanghai Statistics Bureau. Only 8 percent of the consumers earn above 10,000 yuan monthly.
More than half of the Shanghai residents surveyed have previously bought from online merchants. By age groups, almost two-thirds of the respondents were young people between 16 and 40 years old, and 29 percent were middle-aged from 41 to 60 years, the bureau said in its latest report. It surveyed 751 Shanghai residents via hotline 12340.
Women are more enthusiastic about online shopping than men. While 60 percent of online consumers spent below 500 yuan a month last year, only 6 percent spent above 30,000 yuan online last year as consumers were cautious, the bureau said.
