Myanmar, Chinese firm seal green MoU
Myanmar Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry and China’s Sunshine Kaidi New Energy Group Co yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding on Clean Development Management project.
The MoU was inked by Tin Tun, director-general of the ministry’s planning and statistics department and Tao Zepu, head of carbon division of the Chinese firm, at a signing ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar’s capital.
Tin Tun said the MoU is the first initiative between his department and Wuhan-based Kaidi on the CDM consultancy service which will see the two sides cooperate to develop the CDM market and to contribute to sustainable development in Myanmar.
The MoU provides cooperation in CDM advocacy and public awareness raising, analysis of sectoral CDM potential of Myanmar, identification of CDM projects, financing transaction fees and developing CDM projects and CDM rules, he added.
Tao said the MoU will also enhance the cooperation between China and Myanmar in environmental conservation.
The CDM is one of the flexibility mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol.
This mechanism seeks to control the growth of green house gas emission by transferring funds and technology from industrialized countries to developing countries that target emission reduction projects and was viewed as one of the most effective tools to battle global warming and pollution.
Around 70 percent of Myanmar’s population live in rural areas. A five-member family utilizes 2.5 tons of fuel wood per year for daily cooking, and over 90 percent of rural communities cook their food with open stove wasting 40 percent of heat.
