No botulism danger from Fonterra whey, NZ says tests show

NEW Zealand authorities confirmed today that the contaminated whey protein concentrate made by Fonterra does not contain Clostridium botulinum and therefore will not produce bolutism toxins.

The bacteria in the contaminated whey protein was confirmed as Clostridium sporogenes, a different strain that does not produce neurotoxins, New Zealand’s Ministry of Primary Industries said in a statement on its website today.

The ministry commissioned further tests in labs in New Zealand and the United States with a range of methods, which all came back negative for Clostridium botulinum, the ministry’s acting director-general, Scott Gallacher, said in the statement.

The botulism scare that broke out earlier this month caused an international food incident as it affected eight Fonterra customers whose products including big brand infant formula and sports drinks that were exported to seven countries, including China.

The contamination was believed to come from a dirty pipe at a North Island processing plant without proper sanitation processes.

Fonterra’s chief executive, Theo Spierings, said in a separate statement today there is a sense of shared relief that the product was not contaminated with the toxic strain, and Fonterra had done the right thing by initiating a precautionary recall.

The ministry added it has informed overseas regulators of the results and will be providing a full diagnostic report shortly.
