Nuplex eyes expanding local plants
NEW Zealand speciality chemicals maker Nuplex Industries is already eying expanding its local facilities, having just opened its third manufacturing plant in China.
The Auckland-based company has completed its US$35 million resins facility in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, and is looking to build on the operations, Chief Executive Emery Severin told visiting New Zealand Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce who witnessed the plant’s opening yesterday.
The plant now employs 46 people and will lift that to 76 when it hits full capacity. Once it’s fully operational, the plant will produce waterborne and solvent-borne resins used in car paint, textiles, plastics, industrial wood, and protective coatings on agricultural and construction equipment.
Nuplex has increased its focus on Asia in recent years after underinvesting in the past, spending NZ$60 million (US$46 million) on building and improving facilities over the past four years.
The company will invest in Asia between 2018 and 2020, Severin said.
“We’re going to make a decision on the next lot of investment in the next 12 to 18 months,” Severin said.
He also sees China as its biggest research and development hub in the next five years.
