Online ads jump 28% as fastest-rising segment

China’s total advertising spending last year grew 6.4 percent from 4.5 percent in 2012, with online advertising as the fastest-growing sector.

Food and beverage, cosmetics and toiletries were among the top contributors by spending size while L’Oreal, KFC, Wahaha, MasterKong and JDB Group were among the big spenders.

With a 27.6 percent rise in advertising income last year, online advertising was the fastest growing sector, said CTR China, a joint venture of research consultant Kantar Group and China International Television Corp.

Television stations saw a 9.6 percent rise in ad income from a year ago as it remained the dominant advertising channel.

Newspapers and magazines felt the impact of an industrywide advertising spending cut as advertising value fell 8 percent and 6.6 percent respectively.

Radio stations saw advertising revenue grow slower at 3.7 percent after rising 8.9 percent in 2012 as advertising slots and spending by financial firms shrink.

CTR’s data were based on official ad ratings and did not take into account discount rates.
