Online buying overseas gets popular
ONE in four online shoppers on the Chinese mainland spends more than US$1,000 a year on overseas purchases, a latest survey has found.
Buying overseas is increasingly becoming popular because purchasers have voiced concerns about quality of goods on the mainland.
“The concern about quality of products in China is one of the factors to drive Chinese consumers to buy in another country,” the report commissioned by logistic giant Fedex said.
Besides, Chinese consumers have also embraced overseas online promotions such as Black Friday and Christmas sales, the study by independent research firm Forrester Consulting concluded.
The study did not give the total number of online shoppers in China nor the average spending on overseas purchases. But Eddy Chan, head of China operations and senior vice president of Fedex Express, said the spending of Chinese online shoppers overseas is about US$500 to US$1,000.
Also, while the global average for online spending on overseas online purchases is US$300, consumers in Asia Pacific spend on average US$350 per year on overseas online purchases.
The survey also said that China’s mainland received the second highest number of orders from overseas shoppers, after the United States.
Hong Kong provided the highest number of customers to the mainland online retailers, followed by Brazil and the US.
Sales at Chinese e-commerce sites totaled US$440 billion annually and are forecast to reach US$990 billion in 2018, the survey said.
The study completed in September 2014 surveyed 9,006 global online shoppers in 17 countries and regions, including Australia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea.
Chan said medium and small-sized online retailing firms are developing rapidly and gaining popularity among both Chinese and overseas online shoppers.
