Paul Smith set to return
BRITISH fashion label Paul Smith is set to return to Chinese mainland after exiting the market a few years ago, with a new Shanghai megastore planned for the end of this year.
The brand, best known for its colorful stripy designs and men's suits worn by celebrities such as David Beckham, will open a store in Tianjin in September and a 464-square-meter flagship store in Shanghai's Kerry Center on Nanjing Road W. in December.
ImagineX, the Hong Kong-based distributor chosen to handle the reintroduction of Paul Smith to the mainland, is planning a further 24 stores in the market over the next five years "at the very least," a spokeswoman for the group said.
The brand's founder, Sir Paul Smith, said: "We have taken our time to move into Chinese mainland and finding the right partner was crucial to this decision. We hope China will become a significant market for us."
The privately held firm tried to crack China a few years ago but left after sustaining undisclosed losses, and later warned other retailers of the difficulties of selling on the mainland.
