Sanofi China sales grow 8.8% in 2014

FRENCH pharmaceutical giant Sanofi said sales in China added 8.8 percent in the past year thanks to strong performance of cardiovascular and diabetes drugs.

Sales growth in China's mainland nearly doubled that of global increase of 4.9 percent. Global sales stood at 33.8 billion euros (US$38.2 billion), and China sales were 1.6 billion euros.

Jean-Luc Lowinski, senior vice president of Sanofi Asia and president of Sanofi China, told a media briefing in Shanghai that it hopes to lift its market share for diabetes drugs and vaccine business as one of its main business growth engines in the coming year.

At the same time, it will also expand into lower tier cities and counties by offering high quality generic drugs with affordable pricing. Lowinski said the company is open to discussions about launching new OTC products by collaboration with domestic drug companies.

The French company currently has nearly 5,000 medical representatives in China and Lowinski said it plans to increase the number of medical liaison officers to offer professional medical knowledge to medical practitioners and industry expertise, while the medical representative team would be more focused on the day-to-day communication between doctors.
