Shanghai sets up a wine center in Hongkou
SHANGHAI has launched a wine exhibition and trading zone to tap the country's burgeoning wine industry and attract overseas vintners.
The 1.5-square-kilometer zone in the middle part of Sichuan Road N. will include a wine trading center, a wine culture exhibition center and a wine market research center.
China's imports of bottled wine increased 84.9 percent year on year to 496.17 million euros (US$707.49 million) last year.
"A lot of foreign vintners have shown great interest in the Chinese market," said Jiang Wei, vice director of Hongkou District Commission of Commerce. The district aims to grab the opportunity to attract foreign vintners to set up their offices or launch business in the area.
Seven countries including Portugal and Brazil have signed contracts with the wine exhibition center to promote more than 150 wine brands from their countries.
The wine trading zone is also part of the restructuring campaign of the Sichuan Road N, which used to be a shopping paradise for locals but is losing its edge amid rising competition from other shopping malls.
The district has been hosting Shanghai Drinking Festival on Sichuan Road N since 2006 and the 2011 Shanghai Drinking Festival will be held in the 1933 Shanghai, which used to be the biggest abattoir in East Asia and is an arts and lifestyle hub now
Hongkou District has attracted 1,465 foreign investment projects worth more than 5.5 billion US dollars this year.
