Smartphones push online travel sector to new high
CHINA’S online travel market surpassed 100 billion yuan (US$16.1 billion) for the first time ever in a single quarter in the second three months of the year, much of it generated through smartphones.
Revenue for the April-June period rose 57 percent year on year and 12 percent from the previous quarter to 106.2 billion yuan, research firm Analysys International said in a report yesterday.
The number of tourist trips in the first six months rose 9.9 percent from last year to 2.02 billion, the China National Tourism Administration said, adding that Chinese people made 61.9 million trips overseas in the period.
With the rapid proliferation of smartphones in the world’s second-largest economy, more people are booking hotels and air tickets through the smartphone apps, Analysys said.
Also, many travel agencies have stepped up cooperation with popular web portals to promote online bookings.
