Spend and cheer into New Year
SHOPPERS in Shanghai will have extra reasons to celebrate and spend money tomorrow, New Year's Eve, to bring the year to a happy close as several major retailers will offer bargains, including price discounts.
Retailers, restaurants and other entertainment outlets are putting on lots of promotions and activities, offering price discounts, and dining feasts to cash in on the three-day New Year holiday from tomorrow, the last day of 2009, which will climax in a countdown ceremony.
Most department stores and shopping centers in downtown areas, including Nanjing Road E., Huaihai Road, the Xujiahui commercial area and Superbrand Mall in Pudong New Area, will extend their business hours overnight on New Year's Eve and offer shoppers unprecedented price discounts to lure last-minute shopping.
From today, New World Department Store on Nanjing Road E. Pedestrian Mall will offer a 200-yuan coupon for each purchase totaling 188 yuan. The store will also extend business hours overnight tomorrow to 2am on Friday, the first day of 2010. The Nextage Department Store in Pudong, which set a national daily sales record for a single store on last New Year's Eve with 258 million yuan (US$38 million) in revenue, will offer consumers a 300-yuan coupon for spending 500 yuan till 2am on Friday.
Besides the price discounts, seven retailers in Hongqiao business area will offer 40 20-gram gold bars in a lucky draw while shoppers visiting the Superbrand Mall in Lujiazui area will have the chance to win a Volkswagen Polo.
Retail sales in Shanghai grew 14 percent in the first 11 months of this year amid the global financial crisis.
Shanghai's commercial department yesterday launched a Website, www.sh-shopping.sh.cn, to help shoppers looking for various promotions. Shops in Minhang and Baoshan districts will join in the city-wide promotions for the first time.
