Startups boosted by Unilever-local strategic incubator platform tie-up
CONSUMER goods giant Unilever has joined hands with a joint incubator platform to accelerate the growth of local startups with cutting-edge technology. It’s another step that confirms the company’s focus and support for local entrepreneurship after the launch of its Foundry initiative in Shanghai last year.
The joint multinational companies incubator platform launched by the Zhangjiang High-Tech Park aims to become a hotspot where a variety of resources from local firms, startups, multinational companies as well as overseas incubators converge and integrate.
Incubators and companies joining the platform will share technical support, laboratory facilities and learn about the startups’ business developments of each other, so that they can combine their advantages and support each other on business as well as financial level.
“Unilever Foundry is capable of putting the startups more down to earth. Innovation based on real market needs is more appealing to investor’s request,” officials with the Zhangjiang High-Tech Park explained, adding that Unilever was chosen as the only FMCG company to join the incubator platform thanks to it has absolute advantage in terms of consumer insights and marketing capabilities.
Unilever China Foundry expects to kick off six incubator projects in China this year. They chose Zhangjiang High-Tech Park as a collaborator because of its complete industry chain for incubators, as well as outstanding talents resource and cutting-edge technologies.
“We strive to be at the forefront of marketing and media innovations; to have our brands engage in the most creative, efficient and effective ways with the people we serve. Although we have been working with startups for years, we now want to scale up our efforts and, ultimately, embed this as a way of working throughout our organization.” said Marijn van Tiggelen, president of Unilever North Asia.
Shanghai is ready to leverage the opportunities and policies of the pilot free trade zone, the international scientific and technological innovation center as well as the pilot reform zone for all-round innovation to launch a series of early and pilot implementation policy in order to promote multi-aspect innovation with scientific innovation as the focus, and to motivate and promote innovation spirit and entrepreneurship in the whole society.
Foundry aims to find good Chinese startups to work with them together and to establish long-term strategic partnership with them. Each year, the Unilever China Foundry will offer an at least 1-million-euro (US$1.1 million) fund to support the development of the projects in China.
