Unicharm sees China diaper sales to rise 30%

JAPAN’S biggest diaper maker Unicharm Corp expects its China sales to soar more than 30 percent this year as the company targets the high-end diaper market in the world’s second-largest economy.

Unicharm said its net profit worldwide jumped 14.1 percent year on year to US$271.9 million last year, and is estimated at a record high of US$367.8 million in 2015 as the company expands in overseas markets including China, according to the company’s annual report released yesterday.

“We’ll put our back into the China market in 2015 and hope to realize more than 30 percent increase in sales this year,” Takahara Takahisa, president and CEO of the company, told a press conference.

The company’s sales in China rose 2.7 times from six years ago to US$776.5 million in 2013, according to its website.

“We see a growing demand for high-end products,” Takahisa said. “Together with a premium series (of diapers) made in China, we’ll also export more products from Japan to feed the need.”

Unicharm launched a high-end diaper product, “Mamypoko Super Soft Series,” for the China market last September.

China’s diaper market is slated to grow over 15 percent for at least five years due to a loosening of the nation’s one-child policy, Qinbei Research Institute said.
