Unilever breaks ground in Sichuan on 3rd factory

CONSUMER goods company Unilever started construction on its third manufacturing site in Meishan in Sichuan Province.

The initial laundry powder plant will cost 300 million yuan (US$48.4 million) and cover 26.7 hectares, with an expected capacity of 200,000 tons and industrial output of 2 billion yuan.

Unilever has said it aims to raise its total sales in China to 50 billion yuan by 2020 from the current sales of 16 to 18 billion yuan.

It aims to achieve that goal through entering untapped markets including lower-tier cites, launching new product categories and boosting income through mergers and acquisitions.

Unilever is considering several provinces including Guangdong, Fujian and Hunan for its fourth manufacturing site in China, said Zeng Xiwen, vice president for Unilever North Asia.

Personal care products currently make up 70 percent of its China sales and the company said it aims to lift food and condiment sales.
