Website鈥檚 deal on half-price food goes sour
Shanghai-based restaurant review website Dianping.com yesterday hastily ended a nationwide daily deal promotion which offered McDonald’s meal sets for nearly half price after the world’s largest fast food chain denied the cooperation.
But more than 226,000 digital coupons had been sold to consumers when McDonald’s released a statement on its official website yesterday afternoon to say it did not collaborate with other websites or businesses to launch any daily deal or group purchasing promotions.
Dianping said the faulty promotion was “due to some problems in communication.”
The website added that it would further communicate with McDonald’s for a deal.
Dianping promised to compensate any losses caused to consumers.
The website launched the deal yesterday morning, offering a 9.90 yuan (US$1.63) coupon which can allegedly be exchanged for a meal set valued at 19.50 yuan in McDonald’s more than 700 outlets in China.
Market observers said it was probably a gimmick because KFC, McDonald’s biggest rival, recently started a half-price promotion for some of its food items.
