Wider access set for Taiwan's farm products

THE chief economist at China's Ministry of Agriculture said yesterday the central government would ensure greater access to the mainland market for Taiwan's agricultural products following a series of favorable entry policies launched in recent years.

Chen Mengshan said that the government would help Taiwan farmers expand their market presence on the Chinese mainland, and protect the intellectual property rights of the island's agricultural products through tighter market supervision.

The mainland has already applied zero tariff treatment on 15 fruits, 11 vegetables and eight aquatic products of Taiwan, and purchasing groups have gone to the island during the harvest seasons.

Taiwan's exports of agricultural products to the mainland hit US$364 million, a jump of 25 times from 1997, he said.

By the end of 2009, as many as 6,100 Taiwan agricultural enterprises invested a total of US$7.2 billion on the mainland, Chen said.

He also said the agricultural products on the mainland are complementary to local products in the Taiwan market.

"We understand and respect Taiwan's concerns over the entry of agricultural products from the mainland," Chen said.
