Women’s Day set for online sales stunt
Online retailers are using Women’s Day on March 8 as a marketing stunt to draw consumers to pay via mobile phone devices, thereby promoting the applications.
Taobao, China’s largest online shopping site, has promised big discounts on March 8, in a bid to boost usage of its smartphone app.
Users of Taobao’s mobile phone apps on both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android can buy movie tickets for as little as 3.80 yuan (62 US cents) this weekend, and KTV house cash coupons at a discount.
China’s mobile payment size more than doubled in the fourth quarter from three months ago to 775 billion yuan, according to domestic Internet research firm Analysys International.
“Alipay and Tencent’s payment units are trying to swell their mobile payment users by connecting their service with more offline vendors,” the research house said.
Yintai Holdings is one of the department store partners of Taobao and it plans to integrate its membership management system with the online shopping site to offer better consumer experience.
Tencent is also grabbing users by offering discounts at department stores and many other online vendors.
Tencent’s popular smartphone chatting tool WeChat joined hands with Beijing’s Wangfujing Department Store to allow WeChat users to pay 0.01 yuan for a tailor-made gift to collect at the department store.
“Alibaba and Tencent will be the major players in the mobile payment field as they have a large user base and rich resources,” CITIC Securities analyst Chen Jian said.
