Workers in demand in China's booming delivery industry

THE world’s major logistics companies have a great demand for workers in China with the surging development of the industry in the country, officials said today.

Multinational logistics companies are raising salaries and providing training to attract and retain employees, especially high level officials in the company.

DHL, for instance, just held a three-day Asia Pacific employee conference in Shanghai to let their workers communicate with each other and offer them training.

China has seen some 9.2 billion parcels delivered in the courier and logistics industries in 2013, an increase of some 60 percent compared with 2012. The revenue has increased by 37 percent to a total of 144 billion yuan (US$16.8 billion).

“Both high level officials and delivery workers are in high demand with the surging business of the logistics industry in China,” a senior official with DHL China said.

Meanwhile, the multinational logistics firms are also facing competition from local courier firms for workers.

“The courier firms will lure directors from big logistics companies to become managers in their companies and attract managers to become general managers,” the official said.

However, the multinational firms remain more competitive than their local private counterparts. DHL has a turnover rate of only 2 percent at the management level in China, the official said.
