Accuracy key in upcoming economic census to guide growth model shifting
CHINA will kick off its third national economic census at the end of this year, with China’s top leaders urging the data be collected on an accurate, objective and comprehensive basis.
Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli said today at a conference that China will start the census in December to have a thorough investigation of the country’s economic performance. Its findings will guide future policy-making and have a huge influence on how the country shifts its growth model.
“The data should be 100 percent correct and comprehensive, and enable people to have a good understanding of China’s economy,” Zhang said. “It is especially valuable for us to get a clear view of the development in manufacturing and service industries, which are of strategic importance.”
An economic census is a common practice around the world, demanded by law in some countries like China. The United States carries out economic census every five years, while China initiated its first economic census in 2004, and the second in 2008.
When the census starts later this year, millions of investigators employed by the government will go to factories, companies and restaurants to collect first-hand data, Zhang said, adding that the latest technology will be used to handle the data, all of which will be digitized.
