Bankcard holders more optimistic about economy
CONFIDENCE among Chinese bankcard holders increased for a third consecutive month in December due to a stabilizing domestic economy and higher spending ahead of the New Year's Day holiday.
The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index in December edged up 0.05 from November to 86.68, according to a report released today by China UnionPay, the country's sole bankcard transaction firm.
Non-daily necessities spending gained. This was led by purchases of home appliances and leisure spending.
Home appliance retailers saw transactions rise 0.82 percent in December from a month ago.
Spending at supermarkets and retail chain stores dipped 0.03 percent from a month ago despite rising inflation.
The central government's efforts to boost domestic demand and stabilize the economy could help boost consumer confidence in the near term, UnionPay said.
