Barcelona seeks Chinese firms

EUROPE'S economy may be in dire straits but investors can still find business opportunities in the continent and Barcelona is a good place to start due to its strategic location and its experienced professionals in various innovation industries, a Spanish official said yesterday in Shanghai.

Anna Molero Romen, managing director of Barcelona Activa, a government unit that promotes investment to the Spanish city, said she welcomes Chinese investors in the city's emerging markets including logistics, green technology, science and tourism.

She also urged more cooperation with Chinese firms in design, fashion and information technology - areas that Barcelona, Spain's second biggest city, is particularly good at.

"Barcelona is competitive as an investment destination," Romen said. "Chinese investors can see the city as a hub for innovation as well as the gateway to Europe and Latin America."

Home to many small- and medium-sized firms, Barcelona is also a good place to start a business, Romen added.

Barcelona has launched a program that offers foreign investors help in a wide range of services.
