Bush denounces protectionism in Shanghai

Protectionism is a danger and a trade war is extremely bad, former United States President George W. Bush said today in Shanghai.

He said he is concerned about protectionism and the Great Depression experiences already showed its dangers.

He said trade can provide consumers with more goods and services to choose from.

Bush said China is an important country in the world stage and it was important to build good relations with China, which he had done by having regular meetings with state leaders during his presidency.

"I spent a lot of time trying to get to know them man to man and to understand how they think and their concerns," he said at the 2010 Halter Financial Summit today in Shanghai.

The US started the strategic economic dialogue to make sure officials on both sides would have a good relationship and a good understanding, he said.

China, the world's third largest economy, has emerged first and strongest from the financial crisis.

The goal of the Halter Financial Summit "China in a Changing World" is to explore how China coped and thrived when the rest of the world struggled with the recent recession.
